To all the rebels,
I've noticed an increasing visual dominance in our culture, seemingly fueled by our endless consumption of visual media.
Algorithmic feeds make people addicted to screens, disrupting our sensory balance.
We lose touch with what it means to be human and I think that impairs our decision-making for a better future.
The launch of Apple’s Vision Pro made it clear to me: our future involves more screen time.
Because of this, I believe the solution to visual dominance lies in vision itself — not by backing out, but by going through.
This made me wonder: what would be the equivalent of AirPods' noise cancellation for the eyes?
My answer is Float, a visual experience inspired by what I noticed when I closed my eyes, breathed deeply, and did nothing for a bit.
Float overlays a soothing sine wave visual onto your room, creating an environment for contemplation, relaxation, and recalibration.
When I first tried it, the visuals captivated me. To sink in even further, I put on AirPods with noise-cancelation and was completely immersed. I was paying attention to my thoughts and thinking really clearly when suddenly… it clicked.
‘I created a sensory deprivation tank accessible in my bedroom.’
It enabled me to tune out distractions and tune into myself. This realization was so profound I decided I need to share it with you.
Float is compatible with Meta Quest 2 and 3 and is available at float.brendanluu.com. Visit the website on your Quest, click 'Start AR', and immerse yourself.
The experience launches directly from the Meta Quest Browser, no download needed. Enjoy!
Note for the best experience: Create a comfortable floor setting, put on noise-canceling headphones and lie on your back. Rest your head on a pillow and gaze at the ceiling.
I’m hyping this up but let the experience come to you naturally. If you get distracted, simply refocus on the visuals.
I’m very curious about how you receive this. Please write to me, leave a comment, or ask questions if you run into trouble. The nature of this is pretty experimental, so I expect things to break.
With love,
Brendan Luu
